Herbert M. Schilla, 62, of Bemidji, Minn., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji, Minn. Herbert Matthew Schilla was born June 3, 1945 in Duluth, to Edward and Jerry (Keene) Schilla. He grew up in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After his discharge he returned to Duluth. He married Peggy Bascom Aug. 2, 1969 in Duluth. He attended the University of Minnesota Duluth for two years and worked for St. Louis County. Working for St. Louis County for 35 years, he became general superintendent of highway maintenance and then a project supervisor. He retired in 2000 and they moved to their home on Big Lake in Bemidji. He enjoyed bowling and softball and his passion was playing pool. A loving husband, a wonderful father and a great friend to many. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Schilla. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Schilla of Bemidji; daughter, Kim (Eddie) Waites of Fruit Hurst, Alabama; sons, Matthew Schilla of Eagan, Minn., and Todd (Cheryl) Schilla of Cloquet, Minn.; his mother, Jerry Schilla of Proctor, Minn.; six grandchildren; four brothers, Budd (Mary) Schilla of Grasston, Minn., Tim (Kathy) Schilla of Duluth, Alan (Kim) Schilla of Blaine, Minn., Ricky Schilla of Duluth; sister, Peggy (Jack) Johnson of Proctor, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews and a special aunt Peggy. CELEBRATION:11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008 at Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown, Minn. Arrangements were entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, Minn.
